In the heart of Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Phoebe Niringiyimana, a name meaning “I believe in God,” stands as a beacon of dedication and passion. As one of the few female guides in the park, Phoebe leads treks that connect visitors with the majestic mountain gorillas and the elusive golden monkeys.
We had the privilege of joining Phoebe on a gorilla trek arranged by Volcanoes Safaris. This collaboration allowed us to capture the raw beauty of these creatures and the depth of Phoebe’s knowledge. The day was marked by cool, overcast weather—ideal for observing the gorillas in their natural habitat. The mountain gorillas, unbothered by the gentle climate, interacted openly, offering us the perfect opportunity for photography and video.

Phoebe’s enthusiasm for her work is clear. She thrives on engaging with visitors, sharing insights, and fostering a deeper appreciation for wildlife conservation. Her role as a female guide in a predominantly male field is a source of immense pride. She actively mentors and inspires young women, encouraging them to pursue careers in wildlife conservation. Her journey was influenced by a friend whose aunt was also a guide, motivating Phoebe to follow a path that now brings her immense fulfillment—a path not many women in Uganda follow.
Her deep connection with the gorillas is undeniable. Some gorillas recognize her presence, approaching her with familiarity, a testament to the trust and bond they’ve developed with her over time.
Reflecting on our gorilla trek together, Phoebe expressed heartfelt gratitude. She welcomed our team, hoping that our shared moments would inspire future visits and a continued appreciation for Uganda’s rich natural heritage and the ongoing support for gorilla conservation.

Empowering women to step into roles traditionally dominated by men enriches these fields and creates a more balanced society. In wildlife conservation, role models such as Phoebe are crucial in inspiring young girls. Their leadership challenges stereotypes and encourages the next generation to truly follow their hearts and pursue the things they are passionate about. By encouraging more women to work in conservation, we don’t just create opportunities for them—we also create greater awareness among communities and the youth. As more women step into these roles, more people learn about nature and the importance of protecting it.
Phoebe is a true Matriarch, and we are incredibly grateful to have spent time with her. She is an inspiration to us and so many others, and we are honoured to share her story with you.
